– More than a century of Spitz family Watchmaking
The Spitz Watchmaking Atelier is nestled in the heart of historic Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, Florida, carrying on a legacy of three generations of watchmaking expertise.
Founded by Eddie Spitz’s father in 1900, the tradition began as a jewelry and vintage timepiece store in Florida before moving to the Catskill Mountains of New York in the 1950s. ‘Eddie’s Antique Jewelry and Watches’ had a reputation for having one of the most extensive vintage timepiece collections in the USA, the family store specialized in rare and unique pieces from esteemed brands like Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, and Rolex. His grandson, Dan, grew up surrounded by the art of watchmaking and has inherited his grandfather’s passion and expertise.
Eddie’s store was a hotspot for the stars of the Borscht Belt, or Yiddish Alps, a nickname given to the Catskill Mountains region in New York where many Jewish-American resorts and hotels thrived in the mid-20th century. After their evening shows, comedians and entertainers like Sammy Davis jr., Jackie Mason, Sid Caesar, and Buddy Hackett would often stop by Eddie’s store to browse and purchase his eclectic selection of unique time pieces, which he had curated from his extensive yearly travels. His jewelry selection of one of a kind antique pieces was simply an awe inspiring experience to behold as well.
The Spitz watchmaking atelier is a family legacy that spans generations, with a rich history of procuring, selling, and restoring vintage timepieces. From its humble beginnings in the Catskill mountains of New York to its current location in historic Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, Florida, the family has been dedicated to preserving the art of watchmaking and sharing it with their customers.
